JAMIE JORNDT

Jamie is an abstract artist born and raised in Lake Geneva, WI. While studying under the internationally acclaimed artist, Terrance Coffman, Jamie discovered her passion for abstract painting.

Her artwork is a representation of what she feels at a particular moment—raw and intimate. She uses acrylic paints and unconventional tools and objects, such as taping knives and large brushes, to give her large-scale paintings a life of their own.

Tell us something about your process that is hard to tell from photos.

Each of my paintings begins with a layer of collage material fully covering the canvas, panel or page. The materials I use for this layer are typically vintage papers that were once used to educate, organize or keep records for the original owner (think: school workbooks, calendars, ledgers, etc.). I think often about how our everyday lives are built on a foundation of organized rules and expectations - on top of which the lovely chaos of real life sits. It makes sense to me to begin a piece with a nod to 'order', but this layer is typically completely covered by layers and layers of color and expressive marks. In the end you can only glimpse hints of that first layer, but it provides a steady base for me to play on top of.

What do you hope people will take away from your work?

I feel that, in the end, my paintings communicate feelings, which can unlock memories. I hope that the viewer can spend enough time with a piece to zero in on the emotions it evokes, and settle in with a memory it calls forth.
