Art that carries a story.
Midnight Gallery is a woman-owned contemporary art space devoted to the process behind the work as much as the work itself. We celebrate makers who approach art as a way of moving through the world: attentive, curious, and attuned to color, rhythm, and the emotional resonance of materials.
Liz Rundorff Smith
Liz's work elevates the mundane, mimicking the way we bring significance to loss with keepsakes and memorials. She hopes her work evokes a sense of nostalgia and exposes the sentimentality in memory. Color choice is tied to the decor and design trends of decades past that have become kitschy artifacts. Patterns reference fragments of domestic spaces and utilitarian objects while shifting to suggest the passage of time and the loss of stability that accompanies remembrance. Shapes imitate objects that are no longer identifiable but retain familiarity—urns, shrines, and places of veneration.

Kaylee DeFer
Twelve signs. Twelve canvases. Something older than all of us. Kaylee DeFer works in oil pastel on raw, unprimed canvas — a surface that holds a mark the moment it lands. There's no reworking, no scraping back. The zodiac series came from that same logic: each of the twelve signs drawn from memory and instinct, not reference. Capricorn looks like Capricorn because she decided it did.

Midnight Gallery is a woman-owned contemporary art space devoted to the process behind the work as much as the work itself. We believe that every piece begins long before it reaches the wall — in the quiet rituals, intuitive gestures, and intimate practices that artists return to again and again.
