Art that carries a story.
Midnight Gallery is a woman-owned contemporary art space devoted to the process behind the work as much as the work itself. We celebrate makers who approach art as a way of moving through the world: attentive, curious, and attuned to color, rhythm, and the emotional resonance of materials.
Kaylee DeFer
Twelve signs. Twelve canvases. Something older than all of us. Kaylee DeFer works in oil pastel on raw, unprimed canvas — a surface that holds a mark the moment it lands. There's no reworking, no scraping back. The zodiac series came from that same logic: each of the twelve signs drawn from memory and instinct, not reference. Capricorn looks like Capricorn because she decided it did.

This series of activations are titled: The Shape Was Already There These activations begin with field books and found records made decades ago. The process begins by looking rather than making. Shapes emerge from the page instead of being imposed upon it. Color and frame become part of the same surface. The shape was already there.
